The island of Elba is the largest of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, and the third largest in Italy (223 km²). Elba, together with the other islands of the archipelago (Pianosa, Capraia, Gorgona, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

Capoliveri

One of the most characteristic places of the Elba island tour is Capoliveri, which attracts more and more tourists every year for its charm. It still retains the typical structure of a medieval village perched on top of a hill with its 4 districts: the Fosso, the Tower, the Fortress, and the Baluardo.

Its pretty historic center boasts a wonderful square, a real terrace overlooking the sea; picturesque alleys made of arches better known as “chiassi”, tall and narrow houses, hidden views and flowered balconies. The narrow streets offer numerous artisan shops, delicious restaurants, wine bars and bistros where you can enjoy a good traditional dish with excellent wine, not to mention trendy boutiques and delicious markets for the delight of all shoppers.

Porto Azzurro

Another place to visit when on an Elba island tour is Porto Azzurro, a pretty fishing village with a small marina that lies in the waters of the Gulf of Mola.

Piazza Matteotti, is arguably the most beautiful on the island of Elba. A meeting spot for locals and a the place to be for events and festivals.

Don’t miss the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato built by the Spanish governor José Pons y León, to remember the famous sanctuary of the same name existing in Catalonia.

Marciana

The oldest of all the towns on the island of Elba is Marciana. This small village still retains its medieval structure made up of narrow streets paved with the famous Elban stone, narrow houses between alleys always in bloom, the granite of the portals of its houses, and the tiny squares adorned with fountains.

Be sure to check out the Pisan Fortress, a structure built by the Republic of Pisa in the 12th century and continued by the Appiani family.

The Archaeological Museum of Marciana is also worth a visit; here are preserved all the finds brought to light during excavation campaigns, including finds belonging to the Stone Age and the Etruscan period.
