Explore the Piazza Grande

This large square is the highest point in Montepulciano, and it’s also one of the only places in town where you’re not going uphill or downhill. It features some of the city’s most important buildings, with grand architecture sitting side by side with cute, awning-shaded cafes. The 16th-century Palazzo Contucci, which stands above the wine cellars of the Contucci family (who popularized vino nobile), and the Palazzo Comunale, Montepulciano’s town hall and a visual focal point of the square thanks to its protruding bell tower, are two examples. This romantic square was used in scenes from the 2009 film The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Wine Tasting Tour of Montepulciano

No trip to Montepulciano would be complete without sampling its delectable wines.

Montepulciano is famous throughout the world for its rich red Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and, to a lesser extent, its fruitier Rosso di Montepulciano.   Vino Nobile, also known as the “King of Reds,” is one of Tuscany’s great wines. It’s made from the Sangiovese grape and is one of Italy’s best-selling wines.

Church of Sant’Agostino

In 1285, this charming tiny church was established. The church is the oldest in Montepulciano. Architect Michelozzo completely renovated and refurbished it in the 15th century. It may be found on Piazza Manin.The church’s exterior is made of stern white marble. A lovely Madonna and Child in clay with Saints, carved by Michelozzo, is displayed over the entryway.
